Got a headache, Tetley?
I couldn’t face a fizz about the cows today so we have schooled instead. Tia wasn’t really any different today than yesterday. In fact I think she was poking her nose more, but I got some good work within my half hour limit. Her ability to walk over stones is definitely much better than two weeks ago.
Tetley was downright unco-operative today. It’s not like him these days. He did some great work on the right rein but he shrank back on the left. When I sent him out forwards he did his favourite trick of bolting for it. I’m sorry it sounds so “unEnlightened” but I have found that the only way to stop him doing it once he’s started is to haul him to a halt each time. I have tried sending him on and I have tried ignoring it and bringing him back nicely to a walk. He will keep on and on and on doing it for as long as you let him, once he’s started. Anyway, we got some really decent stuff once he realised that he wasn’t going to get let off.
I put him on the lunge to check whether his resistance had been unsoundness. He looked the soundest he has been since before the jumping. In fact, he looked completely sound. I think he was maybe just in a bad mood!
I did his feet last night and took off another mass of flare. I am currently doing this every two weeks at least. Heaven knows what rate his feet are growing at! Tia’s are growing faster now too. She has some marks growing out so it’s easier to judge.
The flies finally found Caddy’s cut – do you think it could have been the anaesthetic in his bloodstream that kept them away? They still don’t seem to be terribly interested in the rest of him, but they were attacking the holes around the stitch entry points. I have plastered it with Sudocrem, which appears to be remarkably fly-repelling. I don’t want to be forced to keep him in – I have no hay to feed him and he frets a little on his own.
I stood back and looked at him this afternoon and he is definitely shaping up into a nice horse now. I’m not sure he’s ever going to be as good as Tia, she has wonderful “leg on each corner” conformation with a wide chest, round bum and a thick neck. But he’ll certainly be nice. I still haven’t totally decided to keep him, it will depend on what he looks like by the Autumn.

the trouble with this heat is, whatever you put on will melt off....
More on cows. I had a friend who had a Thororughbred terrified of cows. So, she bought a pinto horse colored like the black and white cows we had around here. Horse was, at first, terrified if pinto and then decided it was OK. It helped a lot in the cowterror department.
Well, if the mole has moved, now your arena will be even on both sides. *G*
Tucker had some kind of lump on his cheek the other day. I couldn't even lead him with his halter as every time it touched him, he freaked. Could Tetley have a bug bite or bump somewhere that might have made him cranky? Tuck was fine when I took his bridle noseband off.
My bugarmor (That Cashell riding fly scrim) arrived today. Of course, I have to go to a meeting this evening. Maybe I will ride really late. If not, I'll try it out tomorrow morning. Way too hot to ride during the day.
It didn't melt but it did cause the cut to swell and weep. S*d it. It's a lot better now I've got it off again. It's a shame because it is fly repellent - it's 1% benzyyl benzoate, which is what I spray on Tetley to stop the midges irritating his tail. But it seems to cause any open wound on a horse to weep - I use it on Tia to soften the scabs on the mud fever from the boot rubs. 10 minutes after putting it on they are soggy and easy to scrape off. No good for cuts though, obviously :-(

Yes we have cats and they do catch moles - I saw one of them watching a molehill once. When I got back from my hack nearly two hours later it was still sat in exactly the same place watching that hill! They haven't caught this one though.
Yup, I think Tetley just had a hangover or something, why not? As you say, we do.
