It's quite odd. The better Zippy is the day before, the less incentive there is to ride him the next. I'm very aware of his tender age, and if he behaves like an angel even if he has not been ridden for days, then there is simply no incentive to ride him again. Quite the reverse in fact, the incentive is to leave him to grow up.
And isn't it sod's law - when you don't have a camera, you go outside and see him standing close by, four square, with his neck proudly arched and his head looking positively regal - he was an eyeful this morning!
Now I've got a mystery with Jazz's mud fever/cracked heels. It has suddenly got much worse. So either he is even more allergic to the lanolin in the udder cream than he was to the zinc oxide in the Sudocrem, or the Sudocrem was in fact holding back the infection, which has got away now that I haven't used it for a few days. Whichever of those is true, there are now several new patches where they weren't before. I have scubbed off all the scabs (boy he was pleased about that, NOT!) with hibiscrub and dried it all off and turned him out for the night. I'll see how it is in the morning and make a choice about what to do with it next.
Counting down - 10 days, we are getting there.

I use vaseline on both Bil and Roh for mud fever/bites whatever the hell it is and it softens the scabs right off so you can get the clorhexidine in!
d to find IV Horse mud fever prevention, combined with their antiseptic wash, quite good. Queenie had a horrendous case of mud fever once (moved her off that yard pronto, there was a sea of inescapable mud all winter!) and that stuff worked a treat in getting rid of it. poor girl couldn't go out for weeks but the legs got better!
Trish, just went back and read about LB :(. Feels awful when you find something like that after pushing their work, I thnk we've all done that. But you found, thats great.
You really can't get the nose net in the States? That is weird, we cn get them here in NZ.
I wondered if when your working him, it would help to rob a bit of vix into his nostrils to help clear his lungs? Or you can get special horse stuff, eventers use it for xc.
Oh and now I think about it, I don't know if it would help in this situtation, but what about that tap eventers put on th bridge of the horses nose to help them breathe easier?

I used to use inflamol on mud fever, it worked very well. Has a steroid in it tho so you can't compete when your using it.

I have some kind of yellow stuff from my vet for scratches. I have no idea what's in it.
How about something with tea tree oil? I have a salve of that somewhere.
Just use your good judgment with riding Zip. You'll know what's best. Keeping him in light work will be good for developing strength and substance in his bone, but, as you say, you don't want to overdo.
So nice to have such a good boy to ride. Chance is like that and, actually, so is Tucker....of course he is older now. He is never silly after a layoff, just silly at other unpredictable times! *G*
I'd love to ride him Anna but I am so aware that he is only 3 years and 3 months old and is not strong for his age - he had a bad start somewhere looking at how he came to me.

Is it clorhexidine in hibiscrub Mandeigh or is that something else? I've not heard of it.
aye its the main ingredient in hibiscrub.
