Emergency!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the boys in about five o'clock and fed them. When I went out an hour later Radar had eaten nothing and was pawing his rubber mats. Then he rolled. I put him in the barn and he rolled and groaned and he was breathing too fast and far, far too deep. He had gut noises when I put my ear to his side, and pooed a little bit twice, but he was clearly in a lot of pain. When he rolled again and then failed to get up, but just lay on his side groaning with his eyes shut I thought it was about time to call a vet. "He's on his way" they said as I put the phone down.
Superhubby and I togged up warm and went out to sit with him until the vet arrived. As we went in, Radar stood up. Then he got a twinkle back in his eye. Then he walked over to the hay racks and took a tiny bit of haylage. And a bit more.
I did a quick sprint up the yard to cancel the vet and he's on 30 minute watch at the moment, so I'm writing this before I go and check him again. Crikey what a scare!!
I think it happened because they just would not come in last night. I went out three times, I took a torch and went down the field, but they were just in a wierd mood and running away every time I got near. I gave up eventually.
Long term followers may recall that this was a trick of Tetley's - he would not come in if you let it get dark before you went to get him. A day without any decent food, just dead grass, has obviously upset Radar's gut, so I'm going to have to sort this out if he is going to be silly about coming in.
Must go and check him again. I should be off to Your Horse Live tomorrow but of course I won't be going if Radar is at all off colour, it simply wouldn't be fair to leave that responsibility with SH for the weekend.

Sounds like spasmodic gas colic - really severe, sudden pain that then resolves, sometimes without veterinary attention. Hope that's all it is and that he feels OK!

8.30 update - he is fine and has eaten a whole rack of haylage - over half a bale! I've given them more and left them to it. What a lot of fuss about nothing. I thought he was going to die!!

Well, you never know when it's going to resolve itself or require intervention. I suspect it was the call to the vet that made the difference! Thank goodness he is ok. Colic is awful!
So Tetley wouldn't come in after dark! Interesting that he would do that. Now he lives out full time, something that is not possible in the much higher rainfall where you live.
Colic is so scary. Hopefully Radar is fine now and will stay that way. Guess you are going to need to develop some tactics to keep the schedule on schedule even when the boys are being silly like that.
My friend Stacie had the same trouble the other night with her horses. Something in the air????
Ooh, I'm sorry to hear that Caroline. My foal did this a week ago and I called the vet. I've never been so scared. I know what caused it and once I'd resumed normal service in the feed department she is fine again. Suffice to say I have to stay in charge of what she's fed, colic in a foal is a scary thing, she looked like she was going to die too! I hope Radar is fine again now too.

Gosh, what a fright, poor boy.
This "refusing to be caught" when late is a pain. You would think they would be desperate to come in, but it is just the opposite and they get more and more fraught and upset. I had one that would come to the gate at her "time" but if I didn't get her in then she would go back down the field and quite refuse to come to call, so I had to go plodding round the field to find her and catch. She was by herself then so I didn't have a little herd flying round in a paddy.

I wasn't late, they just chose not to come in. And Button has done it again tonight, so now I am beginning to wonder just who the troublemaker is! The other two are tucked up in bed, but they are upset that Butkins doesn't want to be in there with them.
I am cream crackered from standing at YHL for two days, but back home now. I am relieved that Radar has been fine while I've been away.
I've just been told that Button is rattling the gate to be let in, so I'll go and do that. I'm hoping to ride tomorrow, though the weather forecast is dire!
