Good try Zippet
I finally got enough gumption to ride Zippy without letting my disappointment with him spoil a good training session. As a result, I am really getting somewhere with this left rein canter transition. He resisted it for quite a while but finally realised that I was not going to let him counter canter and that I was just quietly going to put him back in balance and ask for the transition again .... and again. Eventually he did two very good tries and I let him stop.
He started the session really well, nicely calm and relaxed and went straight into some brilliant shoulder in and travers. I hadn't ridden him for, what, at least a week? And he was no different from normal. That's pretty good going for a sharp 4 year old, isn't it?
Butty Butkins was lying down for the fourth day in a row when I went out this morning. He's lost a bit of weight. I'm not sure why, since he has ad lib haylage, but it's no bad thing for him to start the summer a bit leaner than he was when he arrived. I can feel his ribs now, which I couldn't then. I'm waiting for a 4ft rug to finish on eBay and if I can buy it I'll clip him out.

Hope Buttie is OK. Not too keen about the weight loss with all that feed available.
Any possibilities of health concerns? His temp OK? Teeth? Worming?
Good for Zip. When he focuses, he can learn. Maybe he is a bit ADD (attention deficit disorder)and smart at the same time which can be a real educational challenge.
I think overfeeding in his previous home Jean - when I said I could feel his ribs I didn't mean it was easy!!!
Also you don't have grass, so you won't see what I see every spring. As the grass comes through, right now, my horses always seem a bit ribbier than normal. If you feed them up, you suddenly find that they have developed the gut flora to digest the new grass and you suddenly have fat horses just when you want it least. So I'm actually pleased with his weight loss, not worried.
Also he has shot up on his backside and is now two different size ponies. All that growing will have taken it out of him too. But judging by how bright and confident he is around the others, there's nowt to worry about :-)))
