It's wet out there!
The weather has changed in a BIG way and it is chucking it down with rain this morning. I've managed to get two great schooling sessions in the barn which have left me feeling really up for the day.
Jazz's work is returning to his pre-op levels with no trouble at all. He's forgotten some of the sharpness in his transitions, but he only needs one reminder and then they are right back where they were. We did some really smart walk/trot with only a couple of strides of a soft walk before trotting again. It's a very hard physical exercise for them I think, and he did it really well. His trot is superb with enormous power and cadance, and he actually lengthened in the short distance of the barn (90 feet/27 metres from wall to wall and only 36ft for the bend).
Zippy was super too. He is learning to bend when asked and his trot/walk transition is hugely improved. He stands rock still for me to get on and only walks away when he is told to. I don't think that he has Jazz's natural rythmn - it's hard to tell because we didn't know Jazz at 3, but he is very reliant on a supportive rein before he can produce any cadance. When it comes, it's very promising though.
Such different horses to ride. Such lovely characters both of them. Such fun!

For ulcers. There is a guy on the Internet who sells a generic ulcergard, omeprazole,in tablet form, made in horse size doses. He ships internationally. www.PonyMeds.com
That's for the omeprazole.
The other drug that Patrice suggested to try first as a "test" is rantidine, which is Zantac here in the USA. Our drug stores carry generic brands, but you need, from my calculations to use about 15-20 tablets for a horse of Zip's size. Patrice said you'd know in a few days if it made a difference. That just stops the acid but does not heal the ulcers as the omeprazole does. I guess it's the one to try out as a test. I didn't keep Tucker on it long enough to know because I was able to get the Ulcergard quickly. (For a small fortune.)
My vet was just fine about the omeprazole and tells me I should dose Tucker before I go to a show or any stress related event and dose him afterwards with the maintenance dose. The drug has no known side affects and is apparently really safe.
I am also keeping him on UGard powder on a daily basis, one of the only meds that seems to have effectiveness for maintenance.
I don't know what's available drugwise over there or how much it all costs. The Ulcergard is very expensive for the 28 day treatment.
Also, horses with ulcers are usually a little better with a full stomach, especially if they have eaten some high quality hay. Do you notice any difference in Zip based on that?
I can get Zantac I think. I'm not sure if it's still prescription only here or not, I'll do some research. It's often easier to order from Australia, which has cheaper prices and laxer laws than we have. I get my cat wormer from Oz, as it's prescription only in the UK.
I get the impression that Zip is getting calmer as the winter progresses and he spends more time indoors eating haylage. On the other hand, he is also maturing very fst right now, so it could just be co-incidental.

Caroline you can get the Ranitidene from supermarkets/chemist ...I use Morrisons own brand exactly the same as Zantac.Morrisons own is 89p for packet of 6, Zantac is over £2!
Jean got that link thanks im going to order some.Im sure with all the stress of AliG arriving and the accident is why he's now going into hyper mode so got to be worth a months proper trial.
The rain just started here tonight but has stopped again..outlook for this week is cold but sunny,thats good news I hate wet weather.
Its great having two totally different characters,im really enjoying it:)

And isn't it just fabuous owning two horses who are as different as chalk and cheese - more than twice the fun, because the one makes up for all the problems of the other!
I'm off to Morrisons! Well, maybe I'll wait until they actually open?
