Why is it ALWAYS Tesco?

I shall have such a reputation in that place soon! I was sat in Tesco's cafe when the enormity of what we have been through hit me. I got my final piece of evidence this morning that Tetley has not been physically or mentally damaged by his horrible ordeal - he allowed Tia to share his bowl of food. Now that I know he is going to live, be healthy and that his gorgeous, loving, trusting nature has not been irreparably damaged, all the stress has gone. I slept for 12 hours last night and 11 the night before. With the end of all that stress, suddenly I was able to cry about it - and did - in the middle of Tesco. AGAIN!

They spent the night in two's again. They all seem very happy with the idea and are out in the field now alternately as a foursome or as two two's, so peace is reigning. Tetley went straight to reassure Jazz again this morning when he came out of the barn.

Now I know that there are probably some foot fetishists out there who would like to know but are too concerned about the situation to ask, what has happened to his feet? The answer, I think, is that he was fed so little that he hardly grew any (there appears to be an event line only half way down his foot and she had him long enough to grow almost a whole one if he'd been with me). The good bit of that is that they haven't gone too badly out of shape. The backs were too long, and flared solely because of that. In one trim they are now tidy with great concavity. The fronts are a bit splayed, but nothing that bringing the heels back today won't cure in a week or two. He was trimmed only days before we got him back. Why IS it that farrier's let heels go long - especially on a horse where they simply run forwards under the foot???

I have been doing a "thank my lucky stars" list. I'm not a religious person otherwise it would obviously be "Thank God". In order of importance:

Mary Lou, for being there, for fighting his corner at her own personal expense (emotionally and monetarily), for caring and for having the wits to know how to get help.

Superhubby, for being a superb negotiator and an incredible support to me.

Claire, for having a stable ready for him to be evacuated to with almost no notice. He didn't go there in the end, so you haven't heard much of Claire, but knowing she was there with a home for him took a lot of pressure off at the time.

Tetley for being so robust and so forgiving.

Victoria, for treating him so badly that we knew we had to rescue him. Without that, he would have been condemned to an old age as a rough riding school nag and sold at auction when he wasn't fit enough to do that any longer.

Thank you all of you for your massive support. If any of you know a really caring home on the Cheshire plain who would like to borrow him long term when he is fit, please ask them to get in touch. Only the best will be considered, obviously!

ps Tia is better, rideable but I haven't the energy :-) Jazz is still unsound but not as bad. Zip is a very good boy.

Horses are amazing about forgetting the past, and perhaps forgiving, once they are safe and content. It took my PJ nearly a year to forget his bad handling at the racetrack, but once he did, he was a gentle, loving soul instead of a defensive "attack" horse.

Tetley's ordeal was a matter of months, but his previous time with you was far longer, so already he has put those months behind him. We could all learn a lesson from that about letting go of our pasts.

BUT, that does not mean letting go of the quest for justice. You are generous beyond fault to "thank" victoria, but she still needs to be brought to justice. There is no excuse for her neglect of Tetley and if she did it to him, surely she will do it to another horse. For all the horses she will ever own, she must learn a hard lesson.

What a sweet boy Tetley is. First to share with Tia and then to again reassure Jazz. And then there is that "tremendously expensive horse" (no pound sign on my keyboard...so what over $30,000?) horse Zip. Clearly a respectful young man with a super social skills. Don't have any second thoughts about taking him on for the winter, you have made a wise decision. He is a real star in the making.

What an amazing journey you have been on since you started this blog. From the heartbreak of Smartie to a barn full of absolutely wonderful horses. Too many, I know, but each one is truly special.

And special people too...Mary Lou and Allan in particular. You may not be religious, but I am. God has truly blessed you!

I can see you getting banned from Tesco yet!

It's funny really, that he's back cos I know you didn't really want to part with him in the first place and only did so in the hope he could work soundly on the level ground......he was obviously not meant to leave you at all.

Not great circumstances in which to return....but a happy ending non the less.

I'm not surprised you've slept so much...it fairly catches up with you!

I've only just caught up and I am so shocked and upset on your behalf, I can imagine how I'd feel in your shoes so I'm not surprised you broke down in Tesco's (twice!).

I'm so pleased that you've got him back and he's on the mend so quickly.

Give him a cuddle from me!

Caroline are you able to divulge how SH negotiated Tetley's freedom?
Did he deal with her in person?
Was she defensive, aggressive or appear unable to see what the issue was?
I'm always intrigued by human behaviour and hers certainly defies belief.
I notice from her short lived blog that she's only 24 and appears in charge of an equestrian centre..that alone astounds me.

PS pleased to hear the crowd are settling down again.

I'm with Cassie on this one --- 24 and owning/running an equestrian centre with a couple of indoors etc etc etc? It all seems a bit - I dunno - fishy - to me.
But I'm far too cynical about some things ...

CThe RSPCA are here and are horrified. I am trying to get hold of my vet, they have authorised paying him to do a report for them on his condition.

Jean, I can't help but agree with you about being blessed.

Mandeigh the thing I have totally forgotten to tell everyone is that he is completely sound and his collateral grooves in his hind feet are level. It slipped my mind in the fuss and bother :-)

Michaela, Victoria is a pretty little blond girl of 24 who married a short older man of 38 who had money. He bought her the Riding School.

Cassie one of the reasons we delayed fetching Tetley back was to do as much research as we could about what would make Victoria release him to us. We found out that she hated to be criticized and that she might be money orientated. Allan spent an hour and a half smiling and chatting, being very careful not to appear critical of her. She cried a fair bit, he tells me, apparently genuinely. He played a "Caroline is so very upset by what Mary Lou has told her" card very strongly, and left big silences whenever she was explaining why she should keep him. We paid her back what she paid us, and then added £200 "expenses" which either appealed to her greed or made her feel that we thought she deserved it and it was therefore safe to let us have him back. The money was not the issue to us, we just needed him out of there.

The reason I have the RSPCA here is not through vengeance, it is because she simply cannot see that she has done anything wrong. The card that she left for me to pick up with him says, amongst other things "Allan has told me that Mary Lou phoned you and has said some very horrid things. I'm not surprised that you want him back. I would if they were true but there (sic) not." This was knowing that I was on my way and would see a horse showing every bone in his body!

So the acquisition of the Equestrian Centre is explained, in a perfectly normal way. I was having all sorts of dramatic thoughts about international money laundering, and so on! There are many men who are apt to be rather silly when manipulated by pretty little women 10 or more years their junior.

That's to be expected, of course.

It's just an enormous pity when the woman concerned is equally silly ...

I'm glad you are taking this further. I hope the vet's/RSPCA report will be forwarded to the ABRS?

you gave her her money back? good god. i suppose in the circs, but really .... sounds like a trip to county court as well (small claims but still.....)

and for those who were wondering, no, the Claire mentioned in the post is NOT me ....

It's OK you paid her back for him. That way she can have no claim on him at all.

As for the RSPCA, I am pleased they are appalled. If that's how they feel these few days later after he has settled in and filled his belly, they would hae been ballistic to see him when you brought him home--the pictures do not lie.

Now, let us hope they translate that horror to action. The sooner the better for the sake of all the horses victoria has.

People who are given things--like big fancy stables--can too often lose sight of the value of that possession.

Allan proved a master of psychology on this one. What is still amazing is that she could still deny there was anything wrong with Tetley's bones right there in front of her face.

So happy that Tetley continues to recover so well, in both mind and body. What a sweet, loving and forgiving boy he is!
Yes, I've been wondering about his feet but thought it tactful to wait a day or two before asking. His feet are important to me - they gave me the courage to take our horses barefoot!
I'm relieved the RSPCA are taking this so seriously - one hears such mixed reports about them.
One of these days I shall venture "Up North" to give Tetley a hug in person, and I might even give Allan one too!!!

Tescos again Caroline, do you think maybe it's time to change stores? Was the marmite at least safe this time? :)

Hopefully the RSPCA will at least go and speak to her, if she is as focussed on image as it sounds like she is, this should rattle her.

I was wondering about his feet as well, thank heavens he wasn't badly shod on top of everything else he has been through.

You did the right thing buying him back so there is no question of legal ownership. A friend of mine ended up buying one of her ponies that had been stolen back. Even though it was at an auction and she had a crime number. It was the only way to get him home there and then.

I think super hubby needs a new superlative, I'm not sure super is quite enough any more.

Liz you can hug my husband but keep your hands off my horse! :-)

Tracey I'd forgotten the marmite! Well remembered. This time it was an egg mayo sandwich.

Amanda, cuddle delivered.

Michaela I shall send the reports to the BHS and the ABRS and Cambridge Council who licence her myself, with photos.

And of course I agree with every possible superlative about my husband. He is a truly special man. We've been married nearly 29 years and I love him more now than I ever did.

MY GOD we knew Allan was a Super Hubby..but this blows me away...WHAT A MAN!!
...SSSH..SuperStar SuperHubby?

Funny about 'her' being married to a older type hubby..the guy I worked for and eventually bought Polo from was loaded(yes it was ill gotten gains originally but he was a nice guy:0)anyway he had one blond much younger bimbo after another.
I always wondered if he really thought it was his white hair and personality they were going for and not his bank balanc?;)

So pleased the RSPCA are involved and I hope they take some sort of action against her ..she sounds like a silly spoilt brat to me and should be held accountable!

Its great the 'gang' are getting on better...Tetley's such a kind/wise soul.

Nicola
