Chewing it over
I stink of creosote! I've never had a pair of chewers like this pair. They attack any bit of wood that they can get their teeth into! Even above their heads and the far side of fences. It doesn't bother me that Zippy chews, every 3-4 year old I've had did it, but Jazz is 6 this year and really should have grown out of it by now.
The nuisance is that in really bad weather I leave the yard open for them to shelter. But they have been having a go at the light fittings and that's very unsafe. Superhubby says it only takes 50 volts to kill a cow standing on damp ground, so they could die if they bite through a wire. They'll just have to stay out in the field. There is a shelter, it's just a bit damp underfoot.
Jazz is not sound and the pulse in his foot it thumping. We'll have to wait a day or two to find out whether it's going to come out as an abcess. It's the same foot as he had one in last time, which concerns me a bit. Though it was a year ago so I suppose I'd be daft to worry about a connection. You can't help it though, can you? Especially as he has a big scar around the back of that foot from where he tried to get out of the lorry that he was imported in.
Zippy was very good today. Some lovely relaxed work, and a great response to half halts to settle the trot. I had hoped that if I gave him more consistent work he would relax again, and it seems to have done the trick today. I wouldn't normally school a horse his age day after day, but I just got the feeling that it would help him to have some consistency in what he does.
I was very aware today of lifting the saddle upwards to put it on his back. I'm over 5ft 8, so he's getting to be a lovely big boy, and still 6 months before he turns 4.

Electric fence wire along the top of rail of the wood fence works a treat.
Anyway you can cover or run the electric wires throught some PVC pipe? The wire chewing is scary. So far, my Boys have left the wiring alone and the only one who chews the fence is Toby....so far.
If there's a pulse in the foot, I'd be more suspicious of an abscess than that scar. Trouble is, tending any kind of injury like that is a real chore this time of year. *sigh*
Good for Zipster. I see nothing wrong with working him daily if you keep the sessions really short. You certainly aren't straining him and it's too good for his brain. He may be the kind of horse that needs a really set routine.

you were right about Zip needing more work, then... good that it's providing the result you thought.
I've got everything wired that can be wired Jean, it's the rest they eat :-(
Well technically Claire it's called creosote substitute. But I was always taught that if it looks like creosote and it smells like creosote and it works like creosote, then it's creosote. I guess there is one nasty chemical missing from it, but I'm blowed if you can tell!

thought you meant the real deal. partner reckons the substitute is no where near as good.... still uses it though, and gets it everywhere...
Funny story about creosote..about 5/6 years ago I did my stable at the old yard.The next day went to Bramham for the XC, it was a scorcher weather wise.After a while my arms started to burn and I mean burn to the point I couldnt stand it and had to got to the St Johns ambulance bit.Turned out it was the creosote on my skin reacting to the sun..and yes i'd had a bath but it must had absorbed into my skin.Come to think of it is that a funny story....
I've always found it works about the same (I only use it to stop them chewing, stain is much nicer for the wood preservation) - except for this pair, who seem not to be put off by it once it's a few days old.
Nicola, it irritates my skin like crazy and it's a devil to wash off!
