He's not home :-(((((

The surgeon hasn't let him come home. Not because there is any problem with him, in fact everyone else at the surgery this morning expected him to go home today, and he is really bouncing and well. Everyone is also commenting on how well he has recovered from the general anaesthetic. Apparently he's unusually bright and chipper for a horse who had one only the day before yesterday.

But the surgeon decided that he should have another day of intravenous antibiotics. I have no idea why, he isn't a good communicator (he doesn't seem to like making eye contact, and always wants to talk to me on the phone not face to face.) I practically had to chase him around the surgery this morning to make him stop and answer some questions I had about how to look after Jazz. He clearly found me a nuisance. I don't understand the need for more intravenous antibiotics, because this morning the duty vet took the canula out of his neck, so she clearly wasn't expecting him to have any more intravenous stuff. And the surgeon said that there was nothing worrying him about Jazz. But I'm tired of fighting our corner, and if we just wait until tomorrow then SH can come with me to collect him and he's touchingly excited about being able to do that!

On the good side, I have been offered a staple remover so that I don't have to take him back to have them taken out, or pay for it - I can do it myself. I didn't even ask for that, so I'm pleased that it's been recognised that I'm experienced enough to do that for myself.

Zippy has completely calmed down now, to the extent that I even think it has done him good to be alone for a few days. It seems to have matured him to realise that he can survive on his own.

Personally, I am absolutely drained. Taking the risk of killing a perfectly healthy horse caused enormous stress. The failure of my vets and their staff to listen to what I said about how to manage him made it even worse. I ended up feeling that I couldn't rely on anyone to do what they said they were going to do, starting at the postponed appointment and ending with not allowing him home today even though nothing has changed from yesterday when they said they would. I'm worn out. I'm immensely grateful that he is fit and well, and that there is a very, very high chance that this will be a cure, given how the operations went, but worn out. I'll feel so much better tomorrow when he is back under my control.

Makes you wonder, 'lack of eye contact', whether the extra treatment isn't some attempt to milk the customer.

Sorry to be so cynical, but his behaviour begs that interpretation.

You might think that Pandover but I couldn't possibly comment :-)

One of the reasons I was so adamant that I wanted a fixed price in advance (which I was never given in spite of promises that I would be) was so that I would never have to even think about whether I was paying unnecessarily for livery services.

I think that it's equally likely that the surgeon now realises that I will create a hell of a stink if anything goes wrong that could have been prevented and has kept him there as a self-defence mechanism. Sorry Jazz, if it's my fault!

Are you sure they think you are competent enough with the staples remover? OR ... they do not want to see you again ? LOL Sorry C. I could not resist.

You are a very "controlling" person. I understand why. Maybe if you had been more with the flow, it would have been less stressfull. It is THEIR responsability not yours.

You are already doing your BEST!

I am sure you scared the hell of this surgeon. He is taking NO risks hence more AB.

I am convinced Jazz will recover very well :-)

He will soon be home.

Well, the last time I let a Vet take total control of my horse's treatment he gave him an unnecessary (and dangerous) stomach wall puncture to test for bowel cancer, while failing to test for kidney failure in a cold-backed horse drinking a dustbinfull of water a night. The horse died of kidney failure after six months of undiagnosed pain which was making him rip the rugs off his own back :-(

It's not the antibiotics as such Muriel, he's on those anyway in his food for another five days at least. They are being given to me tomorrow to bring home with him. It the "intravenous" that I think is odd, and to be honest I doubt if the bill I'm given tomorrow will show it as intravenous, I'll bet they just shove it in his food like I would have done here.

It was their responsibility not to let him hurt himself too, but in spite of having it spelt out in writing, they left him to explode in an unbarred box. It's a pure fluke that he didn't hurt himself. So I couldn't trust them, could I? they proved that themselves unfortunately.

I'd be pretty sure that they will be very glad to see the back of me :-) ! And the feeling will be mutual :-) I like you pulling my leg, by the way, it does me good, keep it up :-)))!

Well, I know you don't like it, Magistrate Who Must Be in Charge, but perhaps they chose to err on the side of caution here. Besides, to coin a cliche, when dealing with a madwoman, "better be safe than sorry." *G*

I uderstand your frustration but having SH at your wheel will be a far better situation. I am glad he's excited about being able to take part in the homecoming.

Zipster will probably be quite silly when Jazz gets back home. Keep a close eye on the shenanigans so we can hear the full story.

Zipster will be put inside the barn to await Jazz's arrival. The risk of him coming through or over the gate is too high to leave him in the yard. So you remember the wall demolition that he did back in February :-) ? Even then, it doesn't mean that he won't run smack bang into the wall inside the barn, though I admit that I have only heard him do that once, in the dark !!

Yes, well that's rather what I'm afraid of Mandeigh :-))) Do you think it can be reversed with a pair of scissors if he gets too much for me???

Good point Nicola - what do you reckon to six months custody for a first time speeding offence? Say 32mph in a 30 limit???? I reckon the Daily Mail would string me up !! :-)))
