An hour is sixty minutes.
We seem finally to have reached a stage with Jazz where we can set out on an hour's hack with a reasonable certainty that it will take sixty minutes. He has given up any serious attempt to turn for home and today he didn't even bat an eyelid at an old and very noisy motorbike that came at a fair speed around a corner and past him. He was a good boy.
I rode Zip for the first time since Thursday, out on the arena. He is beginning to get the hang of circles, and all the work that I have been doing shifting gravel has paid off in the usability of the surface. He was great to get on, walked off quietly, trotted nicely for five minutes and then we stopped. He has grown on well over the summer and with Jazz shortly to be out of action for a while, I will bring him into more work now that he has the physique for it.
Jazz is booked in to be scoped on Tuesday of next week. He has all the signs of laryngeal hemiplegia, which is also the most common cause of breathing difficulties in big horses, so I hope to have that confirmed. The tieback operation to correct it is routine, if expensive and can be done at the local horsepital 40 minutes away. In view of how badly he breathes now, tying up after only 300 metres of fast canter, I think we will just have to go for it.

what's the long term prognosis for the op? Does this 'tie back' generally fix it or is it something thats likely to need attention again at a later date?
The suture can fail, which is bad news because a repeat is more likely to fail. But on the whole the operation is very successful. Long term prognosis is for a permanent cure. The only side effect is inhalation of food and possible regurgitation down the nose, but Zip already does that so it doesn't hold much in the way of fear for me for Jazz. I know of several that have had it done and it was a complete cure. Scooby has been done (I don't think he needed it, but he made a noise so they did it, and he's fine).
So, you will get the surgery and once Jazz recovers you will go out on an hour's ride and be back in 15 minutes as your super eventer races the motorbike and wins! *G*
The Zipmeister is going to have to grow up into the real world of work a bit sooner than he expected, but I think it will be good for him. He needs a job.
Meanwhile, Jazz will lie back against his pillows, sigh one of those big sighs and expect you to wait on him hand and hoof.

I think you are right Jean, the Zipmeister is just begging me to ride him every time I bring him in. We'll take it slow and see how he goes while Precious has a hole in his thoat :-)
