Lost it again!
I am very frustrated! Jazz has lost his left to right flying change again. He has it spot on in the tiny space of the barn, but I can't reliably get it in the bigger space outdoors. Damn, and I was so enjoying doing them! It's connected with the quality of his right canter, and he is changing in front and then running off. I'll think about it while I am at work tomorrow and see if I can find some way of helping him understand better what he needs to do. I really don't want to ride indoors while we have the weather to stay outside. It's such a bonus to have a late start to the winter and I don't want to waste a minute of it!
Radar and I went out for a hack. He was unsettled, a bit spooky, lacked forwardness and set his back, which was downright uncomfortable under my seat at times. But we got a good long hack in with plenty of hills, which will keep him fit for the hedges on Saturday. He is a strangely anxious horse, a bit like George in that respect. So loveable with it though, you just want to reassure him.
Butkins is a furball - two inches or more all over. And the good news is - you ruffle it up a bit and all the dirt falls off. That's a relief - when he arrived earlier in the year I had to cut all the knots out, so I had no idea how high maintenance that great thick coat was going to be. Plus he adores having his coat ruffled, and makes terribly cute faces the whole time!

It seems that you have one that works inside and one that works outside, on dressage type riding that is. Question is - where does Butkins work best?
Well .... 27 metres to a horse Butkins size is 81 metres to a horse RadaR's size..... so I think he will work well indoors. Now - where can we find him a pint size Grand Prix rider?????

The flying change meltdowns will happen. It just means Jazz doesn't quite yet understand the concept. Once he does, both changes will become super reliable.
Figure eights worked with Toby--two 20m circles with the changes in between. You could try first doing a change through the one stride trot and then going on to the fly.
For PJ, he got the concept by doing the change out of a very straight--without a lot of bend--half pass to the rail. Then on the rail he was kind of positioned and ready to swap behind.
Good news about Buttie being kind of "ruffle" and wear. And since he enjoys the grooming routine so much it will make it kind of fun to dust him off. *G*
I love seeing him wrinkle that little nose - it's adorable!
