Too nice to school!
More sun! No wind! Clear blue skies. Wow, if this is global warming bring it on!! (oops that's a bit un-pc isn't it, sorry).
Both boys had the 35-40 minute "triangle and back" ride today. Jazz was happy but a bit tired after yesterday. We just ambled along happily - well, until he saw two sheep up on a bank by the road where they shouldn't have been. He went to throw a right tantrum, backed up and put his foot into a ditch on the roadside and suddenly decided that I knew better and he would do what I said. That'll have been one really, really good lesson. He scared himself without hurting himself when trying to avoid my instructions. Following my instructions was safe. Good result!
Zip was right back on form with all his bounce returned now his growth spurt is evening out. I've discovered that he is hard-wired for extended trot. I had tried a little lengthening up an incline with Jazz and wasn't getting much of a result. I tested my aid on Zip to see if I was getting it wrong or Jazz was just tired. Boy oh boy, Zip lifted into a full on medium trot immediately, and would have gone full extended if I had suggested a bit more. I thought it was a fluke, brought him back to working trot and tried it again with exactly the same result. it was so much fun I did it a third time too :-)
So I have one horse hard-wired for natural collection and one hard-wired for natural extension. I'm pretty happy with that contrast :-)
Zip is sound and his knee is the right size, but his leg continues to weep odourless fluid - there was one heck of a bruise in there :-0 ! I'm absolutely certain it's not infected, there is no smell, pus, significant heat or any other sign of it. No point calling a vet, it'll be better in its own good time.

PS: Settelex also has mag. carbonate in it - probably best to add it too, if only to balance your mag/cal ratio... N
Good for Jazz. I remember once when Russell R. was throwing a tantrum about going somewhere I wanted. He stepped off the trail into a bit of swamp, sank in to his hocks, pulled himself back out and decided listening me was a far better option. *G*
The Thoroughbred I lost to colic surgery had a natural extension like Zip's. It was so wonderful to ride I could have done it all day. I will just have to "feel" it through you, I fear. Tuck is a collector too. Maybe Chance?????? Nah.
Enjoy that weather. It's raining and chilly here.
I couldn't get the limestone flour anyway, my local place only had "horse" stuff which is a stupid price. I'll get it from the agricultural chemist in town tomorrow if I can. I'm not sure that mag/cal ratio actually needs balancing in food Nic. Horses are for the most part self regulating through their digestion. There's a particular problem with excess phosphorous which "takes up" the receptors for calcium if the calcium isn't high enough, but calcium/magnesium should balance itself. The calcium carbonate is not for the food value, it's to neutralise gut acid in the stomach. If they don't need it in their bodies then it should pass through unabsorbed.
It's a joy isn't it Jean, effortless lengthening. Zip si the first horse I've ever had that could do it, but it's very much a throughbred trait, and with his TB appearance it does suggest that he has picked up a substantial TB influence.

jealous ... that you could get out inthe daylight!
I know, Claire. I remember what it was like to only ride in the dark in November to March. I really do appreciate my luck, just sorry everyone can't share it.
