Radar half solved
The solution to Radar rearing when I got on was to hold the inside rein and only half mount. Making sure the girth was plenty tight! I stood in the one stirrup until he stood still, and then finished mounting, rode a circuit in walk and got off and did it all over again. It takes some gumtion to do, but it worked a treat and I was very pleased with him.
It took only three attempts to get him to stand rock still for the whole process, and we stopped there because he had been such a good boy.
Unlike Jazz, who I will have to tell you about later, dinner's ready!

Yum, that was good. So, Jazz. Jazz wanted to be a VERY bad boy today because I have put a new sleeper at the side of the arena to hold the surface on, where there has not been one before. He couldn't, because I now routinely ride him in a double bridle. So he evaded by squirming all over the place. I put him on the quarter lines to make sure I had him straight. Then he evaded by going through my hands. I did some walk/halt, to remind him that he needed to walk out but be waiting and balanced at any time to halt when I ask. WOW! Did he rear or what!!!! I was touch and go about getting off, but he was so balanced I could actually keep a contact on the rein and sit there and wait for him to come down. He did it again after another few minutes until it dawned on him that it was achieving nothing and stopped messing about.
We finished with some really competent trot half pass (which is a huuuge improvement to the left) and some good attempts at medium trot. He then chose to have a bath - he wasn't tied up and I just said to him that I would stop if he moved away. Instead he moved closer. He has turned into a right water baby!
Lesson tomorrow (I think! It's in my diary anyway)

Good job!! The one rein theory worked again. Glad Radar accepted it and stopped the rearing....too scary by far. You'll just need to do it a few more times and not forget about it as a training exercise should he get "silly" again.
I feel better now....except for the ominous comment about Jazz at the end of the post.
Hope dinner was good....now, what's the rest of the story????!!!!

Gotcha...oh my. I don't like the rearing, even if he was balanced. I find the best way to get past a spook thing is to do a shoulder in before and as you pass the scary thing. Horse looks away from the object of fear and also has to concentrate on the exercise. Again, the lateral movement, more one rein than the other might discourage "up" as a resistance. And, usually, you can then also concentrate on foward as well by demanding the horse step through correctly.
Now, I hope your diary is right this time and you actually do have a lesson. Jazz could use a challenge for that overactive imagination of his. *G*
I hate rearing, no matter what the cause. Ever since Stacie got hurt it sends chills up my spine.
He wasn't spooking Jean. He just wanted to move when I wanted him to stand still !
