I took Radar into the barn for a "stand still when I'm getting on, you monster" lesson :-) I tried Jean's recommended Kenny Harlow technique. Every time he moved I put him out to work on a short lunge line. The lunge line broke, so I tied it. It broke again, so I tied it. It broke again, and I thought "hmmm, this lunge line has rotted since Smartie left :-)))" I tested it and managed to break it easily in four more places, so finally with seven knots in it it was ready for use!
I brought him back and stood him up and he moved again, so off he went. Third time, and the same thing happened. Fourth time - stood like a rock. I moved him and the block and stood him up again. Like a rock. So I got on and did a few circuits in walk, got off and tried again - not moving an inch. Well that was successful, wasn't it :-) ? Thankyou Professor Jean!
We had a nice walk session then, which was very pleasing, especially since I hadn't ridden him for two days. He was very bright, very chirpy, but also very well behaved. He's an odd but delightful combination of "up" and "quiet" at the same time. I'm still trying not to hope for too much, but he does seem like the most wonderful replacement for Zippy to me.

The thing I like about most of Kenny's techniques is that they don't require any extraordinary equipment. Because of that, you can do them anywhere the problem crops up and almost anyone can do them.
For training, he does use a bridle with a set of reins you can snap off on either side--thus creating that instant lunge line. However, once you school the horse to stand a few time, you don't need a line if he moves off because all you have to do is use your regular reins to circle him a few times, and he'll get the message quickly.
So happy it worked. I know how annoying a moving horse can be to mount. I am also so happy to hear how well Radar seems to be working out so far. He still looks to be a star.
Chance seems to have a similar personality. He is very quiet but so far very willing to go with a good attitude about it. He does get tired faster than Tuck and Toby, but he never really tries to quit because of it. If I ever get him properly fit, he should be a consistently "fun" kind of ride.
essentially, that's how i eventually sorted molly out! works well.
Only one thing to add.....buy a new lunge line:))))
