What a quick learner.
I got back froma long drive tired but too hyped up to have a rest so I have ridden Jazz out. He went to turn for home at a piece of flapping haylage wrapper in a hedge (my wrapper!!) and I slapped him with the whip and he went forward fine. The rest of the ride was great too. He is definitely learning.
But the quick learner is Zipperoo. All the long-reining stuff that we did on Thursday he had learnt and he started today the way he finished then. So I was immediately able to introduce trot, and guess what - he exploded. Bucking and skipping all over the place. That lasted a few times and then calmed right down and we got some nice trot and down to walk again. I two-rein lunged him and he got that immediately. He's quick and no mistake.
SH is terrified that I will be tempted to try and back him again myself, but I've made up my mind now. I'm not the right person for him. Ten years ago, maybe even two, but not now. SH did a "look I'm not a nasty male" session with Zippy too and that seems to be getting through now as well. Which is just as well because Jonathan is a man of course :-) I am using the next week or two to try and get Zip as far forward as I can, I don't want to have to pay Jonathan for things that I can do myself.
Tetley has unfortunately tweaked his bad hock in the field and is currently unsound on it. The staff said it was his near hind and of course Mary Lou accepted that. But Dave posted a short video on their website and it's his off hind, just like it always was. It's a pretty acute spell, I haven't seen him any lamer, but the two (three? I lose count) times it happened with me it recovered after 5 days to a week. I hope it goes the same way for her, I'll let you know if ML doesn't.
I finished this afternoon by putting up Jazz's torture chamber for tomorrow :-) A grid of four fences in a row. We'll see what he thinks of that, introducing them progressively of course not all at once, the poor fellow would keel over in shock! I'm hoping it will help him learn to deal with more complicated jumping situations.

The short stride is when his near hind hits the floor. (Look at the footfall and nothing else.) The reason that stride is short is because his OFF hind is sore and cannot push as hard as the nearside one. So the stride is shorter. He is definitely lame in the off hind. Check the dramatic hoick upwards of the right hip as he uses the right hock, too.

I watched the video too, but really didn't pay attention to which leg. Decided irregularity in stride with the near shorter. I'll go with Caroline as she knows Tetley better than anyone.
Here's hoping he comes sound soon. Poor boy. Probably just a bit too happy and silly now that he is feeling better.
Zipperoo is definitely showing the hot blood in his breeding. It will give him that special flair, but will be an interesting train in the meantime. You are taking the right approach--due caution and a professional trainer. Johnathan is going to have fun with him because he is such a fast learner.
Though, I do remember a quote from Kenny when he had Tucker down there. All was going really well and then one day, Tucker went "ballistic." Overload reached.
As for Jazz..what a star. He is a good solid learner. Slower than you'd like, perhaps, but he retains the lessons and packs them into his behavior pretty solidly. Already, you can hack out and have a good time.
Can't wait to hear how the grid goes.
oh. i was looking at it that the short stride was the lame side... as jean says, probably enjoying himself too much in the field!
hope Zip's retaining the lessons that not all men are scary - it would be unhelpful to jonathan if it's just that he's decided alan's not scary but all other men are.....

I think that Zippy is going to be that way. Fine to a point and then if you don't stop, into overload. He's definitely got a lot of thoroughbred in him from somewhere. I konw that they used them improve and lighten the warmbloods to produce event types. And Zip is definitely an eventer type.
Claire I need some more men! I was wondering where to get one from and came up short!

can't help on the man front, sorry....your friends not got OH's prepared to put themselves forward...
My friends' OH's are so inept in dealing with horses I'd be scared to let one of them near him. One thinks all he'd need to do would be to walk up and get on him! Another thinks he'd make good steaks for the window of his butcher shop ....... :-))))
